When to Say “Yes” to an Expense
September 29, 2026

Sale season, payday promos, barkada plans, or a long day at work—there are plenty of moments when saying yes to a purchase can feel too good to pass up.
You’ve worked hard for your money, and you deserve to enjoy it. But when several expenses compete for the same paycheck, it can be hard to tell which ones genuinely matter and which ones are simply tempting at the moment.
When you’re unsure, try this quick YES Checklist before you spend:
Y — Your need is valid.
Ask yourself: “Do I really need this?”
Filter every purchase through your “Why?”. Will it help you with work, take care of your family, solve a problem, or is it just an extra?
New work shoes to replace your worn out pair? That’s a real need. A grocery restock for the family? Also a need. A mid-week treat? That’s a want.
The goal of knowing your “Why?” isn’t to deprive yourself of what you enjoy or to label every want as “bad”. It’s to know why you’re saying yes, so you can choose what to prioritize today, what to scale back, and what to save for later.
E — Expense fits your budget.
Ask yourself: “Can my budget handle this?”
A worthwhile expense can become a problem if it takes funds away from something more important.
For example, a discount sounds like a good deal but it still needs to fit your budget. After paying your bills, food, transportation, savings, and other commitments, is there enough room for the item you’re eyeing?
If you can cover the expense without putting your essentials or financial goals at risk, that’s a strong reason to say yes. But there’s one more thing to check before deciding if it’s worth it.
S — Stress isn’t driving the decision.
Ask yourself: “Would I still choose this if I wasn’t stressed, pressured, or in a rush?”
Sometimes, spending is a quick way to cope. But even when you have the money, relying on purchases for temporary relief can lead to an expensive go-to stress reliever. Over time, this can make it harder to tell the difference between a genuinely valuable expense and one that only feels good at the moment.
That’s why it’s important to know whether you’re making the choice or the pressure is making it for you. A limited-time sale, FOMO, social expectations, or a stressful day can make an expense feel more urgent than it really is. If you’re unsure, pause and give yourself time to decide.
Now, if all three are a strong YES, you can spend with more confidence. If one isn’t, use it as a reason to pause, rethink, or plan for it later.
What to do when one isn’t a loud “Yes”?
Sometimes, the answer isn’t clear:
- Your needs are valid, but your budget isn’t ready.
- You have the budget, but you’re still unsure about the expense.
- You have the reason and the budget, but stress or outside pressure is influencing your final decision.
