Tips to Stay Healthy on a Budget

August 19, 2024

We all know how challenging it can be to keep up with a balanced diet and exercise routine, especially when it feels like a drain on our time and finances. Busy schedules, tight budgets, and the rising cost of living can make maintaining your well-being seem out of reach.

But staying healthy doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With a few simple lifestyle changes, you can prioritize self-care without stretching your budget. Here’s how you can do just that:

Buy seasonal produce

  • Why: Seasonal produce is fresher, more affordable, and more nutritious than food grown out of season. Fruits and vegetables in season are often sold at a low price due to their abundance. Locally grown produce also supports the environment and farmers.

  • How: Buy local produce from barangay markets, cooperatives, or online farmers’ groups to get the best prices. During the rainy season, leafy greens like kangkong (water spinach) and root crops like gabi (taro) are not only affordable but also packed with essential vitamins and minerals. Add these to soups, stir-fries, or as side dishes.

Replace red meat with other proteins

  • Why: Reducing red meat consumption can lower your risk of heart disease, high cholesterol, and other chronic conditions, leading to long-term health and savings.

  • How: Swap red meat to more affordable proteins like chicken, fish, or tofu in your daily meal plans. For example, opt for adobong manok (chicken adobo) instead of pork, or have tofu stir-fry instead of beef. These dishes are easy to prepare and lighter on your wallet compared to red meat options. You can still eat beef and pork but limit it to only a couple of times a week.

Start a vegetable garden

  • Why: Fresh vegetables and herbs are not only flavorful but also rich in antioxidants and other nutrients that support overall health. They can also be used as natural remedies for common ailments, saving you from purchasing costly medications.

  • How: Grow low maintenance herbs and vegetables that thrive in tropical climates like mint, basil, malunggay (moringa), okra, and lettuce in small pots or containers. Use them to make herbal teas, garnishes on food and drinks, or as healthy snacks.

Stay physically active

  • Why: Regular physical activity is crucial for preventing chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity which are often linked to expensive medical bills.

  • How: Walk or jog in local parks, join community exercise groups, or follow free home workout videos available online. Even a daily 30-minute walk can improve cardiovascular health, boost your mood, and sharpen mental clarity—all without any cost!

Get quality sleep

  • Why: Adequate sleep is vital for overall health, supporting immune function, mental clarity, and emotional well-being. Poor sleep can lead to various health issues, which might result in costly medical treatments.

  • How: Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Create a relaxing bedtime routine by reducing screen time, dimming the lights, and engaging in calming activities like reading or meditation. Stick to a consistent sleep schedule and ensure your sleeping environment is comfortable and quiet to promote restorative sleep.

Self-care deserves the top spot on your to-do list. Staying healthy doesn’t need to strain your budget. Making conscious, thoughtful decisions are powerful enough to pay off in the long run.
