HR professionals can unlock an employee’s talent by providing them learning through various avenues. In this month’s Level Up episode, Jenn takes on a conversation with People Management Association of the Philippines (PMAP)’s Julia Robillos and Sykes’ Shane Baetz about why ongoing training is a must for your company.
An upgrade is needed especially during challenging times
During the talk, it was highlighted that change is inevitable – especially during these times.
PMAP’s Chair for Engagement, Julia Robillos, shares that awareness of what’s going on in the business environment is a must. “If you don’t innovate, you will evaporate” She warns.
“When times are challenging the more you need to upgrade your people in terms of their skills particularly the mindset.” she points out that attitude is a priority item to address in learning development programs in order to equip teams to thrive, even during challenging times.
Shane Baetz, Head of Shared Services at top BPO Sykes agrees. He tells us that to be able to reach your goals in an increasingly complex business environment, training your leaders on how to deal with adversity pays off. He also shared how his organization adapted to change when the pandemic started. (disclosure: Sykes is an Uploan partner employer)
According to him, in between sleepless nights, “A lot of companies looked at what we do now not just to drive career growth but to tackle the realities of our leaders during a once in a century pandemic.”[/vc_column_text][vc_raw_html]JTNDaWZyYW1lJTIwc3JjJTNEJTIyaHR0cHMlM0ElMkYlMkZvcGVuLnNwb3RpZnkuY29tJTJGZW1iZWQlMkZlcGlzb2RlJTJGNGFVcERLVWxiU2plVnhJMGVHQ3ZxNiUyMiUyMHdpZHRoJTNEJTIyMTAwJTI1JTIyJTIwaGVpZ2h0JTNEJTIyMjMyJTIyJTIwZnJhbWVCb3JkZXIlM0QlMjIwJTIyJTIwYWxsb3d0cmFuc3BhcmVuY3klM0QlMjJ0cnVlJTIyJTIwYWxsb3clM0QlMjJlbmNyeXB0ZWQtbWVkaWElMjIlM0UlM0MlMkZpZnJhbWUlM0U=[/vc_raw_html][vc_column_text]Leaders play a key role
In addition, Shane who is Sykes’ Vice President for Leadership and Development, compares intentional training to basketball wherein leadership development not just focuses on how an employee can be prepared to take on more but how he can grow the skill set he/she currently has.
“Training won’t always solve a gap. A lot of times it will come down to if it is a skill issue or is it a will issue? If it’s a skill issue, training will help if someone has a skill do they want to apply it? Or is there a roadblock? That’s where the leader plays a key role?”
In conclusion, it is truly a good step to invest in your workforce by handing them continued education to level up their skillset and mindset. Train your team leaders to deal with adversity as this emotional agility will serve them and your organization well.
