It’s the sum total of our daily actions and experiences.” Renowned businesswoman turned wellness advocate Ariana Huffington says in her June newsletter. She describes the value of a “first-mile approach” or benefits of managing health while people are still well to reduce the overall cost of being unwell. This is contrary to the existing approach, where we only give care to people who are already unwell.
She says this means “shifting our mindset around health and well-being, both in our individual lives and collectively.” But how can we shift our mindset especially in our current situation?
We answer this question in the Level Up! podcast’s June episodes. Our host Jenn Simons has an extensive conversation with Mitch Genato, founder and group CEO of the Romlas Health Group and the man behind Life Science Center for Health and Wellness.
He shares the Life Science approach of meeting a patient where she is to find the one thing to start with that will open the Pandora’s box of wellness habits within her. [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Health care isn’t just about doctors and medication
Mitch sees the current state of health care as disease management. But for him, health care isn’t just about doctors and maintenance medicine.
He shared results from a 2011 study that showed 8 out of 10 deaths from the region are caused by non-communicable diseases – the result of poor lifestyle choices.
“We’ve been so callous and have gotten so used to this reality that we’ve been coping and dealing with it.” he said.
As one of the country’s pioneer health care practitioners, he believes that health care should be taught where people spend most of their time in–school and at work.
Mitch shared that in Life Science, they don’t have “band-aid” solutions for their patients. Instead, they learn as much as they can about each individual to plot out what to prioritize. This guarantees that each program is suited for each individual.
One of the things that Mitch and his team prioritize to better an individual’s wellness is nutrition. For him, eating habits are like a treasure map that leads their team toward a holistic picture of how well the person actually is.[/vc_column_text][vc_raw_html]JTNDaWZyYW1lJTIwc3JjJTNEJTIyaHR0cHMlM0ElMkYlMkZvcGVuLnNwb3RpZnkuY29tJTJGZW1iZWQlMkZlcGlzb2RlJTJGN2dCbVFrSWNscTV3VzRhQ291cjIzQiUyMiUyMHdpZHRoJTNEJTIyMTAwJTI1JTIyJTIwaGVpZ2h0JTNEJTIyMjMyJTIyJTIwZnJhbWVCb3JkZXIlM0QlMjIwJTIyJTIwYWxsb3d0cmFuc3BhcmVuY3klM0QlMjJ0cnVlJTIyJTIwYWxsb3clM0QlMjJlbmNyeXB0ZWQtbWVkaWElMjIlM0UlM0MlMkZpZnJhbWUlM0U=[/vc_raw_html][vc_column_text]Mental health is health care too!
Linked to nutrition are the person’s experiences, mental health and emotions– something that has gotten a lot of attention lately.
It’s no surprise to Mitch that the number of suicide cases has increased drastically. He agrees with the UN- WHO that there is a mental health pandemic on the rise. But for Mitch, the best way to get a handle on it is to identify just one thing to change that will create a domino effect to your lifestyle. Just one thing to get your wellness journey started.
