It’s part of their process of getting into work mode. After all, makeup has the power to give confidence, which can positively impact our productivity at work. Now that we’ve transitioned into the new normal, however, is it still the case?
To put that to the test, our hosts Jenn and Firas took on a makeup challenge – wear makeup for four days straight and then four days again without makeup. They then assessed if wearing makeup made them more productive at work.
The experience
Jenn and Firas are both makeup lovers, which is why the challenge was really a challenge for them. They’re used to wearing makeup on a daily basis, making the days without makeup insightful ones.
Jenn was distracted because she found herself being more conscious of the fact that she didn’t have any makeup on. While Firas on the other hand, although appreciated the extra time thanks to not having to put on makeup, felt like something was missing throughout the day. More and more workplaces are becoming open to gender being more than just a binary concept. There’s not a single way of expressing oneself in the workplace, and HR practitioners are recognizing that.
Jenn shared her experience on how makeup was part of the uniform or dress code, expounding how makeup can be a way to reflect one’s personality. Firas shared his experience on making sure he wore appropriate makeup in the workplace – that is sticking to neutrals or going for the no-makeup makeup look.
The verdict
At the end of the day, makeup comes off, and it’s really up to you if you want to wear it. What makeup and how you wear makeup is a different conversation because the context must be considered. What must be mentioned, however, is how functional makeup can be. The perception of makeup being shallow is really the kind of thinking that should exist anymore.
Makeup can be used as a tool to make you look better, which can make you feel better and do better at work.
